"This is What it Means" is the main short story on which the movie Smoke Signals is based. The story was written by Sherman Alexie, and the film was written by, directed by and stars Native American Indians. In addition to reading this short story, conduct some "inquiry reseach" on the film, the author, anything associated with the movie, book or issues that you find of interest. Scour out some interesting trivia - such as why the movie was controversial, why Alexie is a controversial writer, who some of the other cast members in the movie are, anything you can connect out of curiosity and research. Bring information to class next week to share (good to know the source, not just say - "I read it somewhere on the Internet..."). We will spend next week watching the film and wrapping up discussions about hero myths.
